Welcome to Leek Building Society Charitable Foundation

 

Leek Building Society Charitable Foundation was founded in 2021 to support local schemes and good causes across Staffordshire, Cheshire, Derbyshire and Shropshire. The Foundation’s primary purpose is to provide grants and donations that will have a positive impact on the lives of disadvantaged or vulnerable people in our communities.

Please read the below criteria carefully and check that none of the exclusions apply to your charity/organisation.

 

The Foundation will consider your application if:

  • Your charity/community organisation is based in Staffordshire, Cheshire, Derbyshire and Shropshire and is within a 10 mile radius from either one of the Society’s branches or the Head Office in Leek. For a list of all Society locations, please click here.
  • You are applying for a grant no more than £5,000.
  • You don't need to be a member of the Society to apply for funding.

 

The Foundation welcome applications from organisations who are working towards:

  • The prevention or relief of poverty
  • The provision of welfare advice
  • The advancement of community facilities including the development of green spaces
  • The provision of healthy food to vulnerable and disadvantaged people
  • The development of digital inclusion
  • The support of local people attempting to return to employment

 

Applications will not be considered if received from the following:

  • Charities/Organisations that have not submitted their annual returns to the Charity Commission or Companies House
  • Charities/Organisations with an annual turnover in excess of £250,000
  • Requests for sponsorships and general fundraising appeals
  • Requests to fund administrative costs, including salaries, travel costs, rent or promotional material
  • Projects with a political element
  • Charities/Organisations that have received a Leek Building Society Charitable Foundation donation within the last three years

All applications are reviewed on a quarterly basis by the Trustees and they will notify you of their decision in writing.

The Charitable Foundation is run by seven trustees, three of which are colleagues at Leek Building Society and four who are external. Read their full profiles by clicking here.

 

 

The Leek Building Society Charitable Foundation has proudly supported a range of local charities and community groups by providing funding for them to continue their incredibly worthwhile work. A few examples of where some of the Foundation’s grants have been donated to can be seen below.

 

EqualBase - Cheadle, Staffordshire

A not-for-profit organisation in Cheadle specialising in development programmes and activities, was granted a donation to help them add more accessibility-friendly outdoor furniture, such as high planters and wheelchair friendly benches, to their garden.

 

 

 

Leek & District Samaritans - Leek, Staffordshire Moorlands

The Samaritans received a grant to help them deliver in-depth training sessions to future volunteers, so they can develop the knowledge and skills required to help and support local people in need.

 

 

 

Silklife Foodbank - Macclesfield, Cheshire

Run and supported by Silklife Church, the Foodbank received a grant to help provide local people with the essential food and sanitary items they need during the cost-of-living crisis.

 

 

Frequently Asked Questions

Your application will be considered if your charity or organisation meets our application criteria. Please ensure you read these carefully before you apply.

Applicants can apply for a maximum grant of £5,000.

The trustees usually meet quarterly, in January, April, July and October, so applications can take up to three months to be assessed. Following the meeting, we will write to you and let you know whether or not your application has been successful.

The Foundation will not usually award grants to an applicant that has:

  • Previously submitted an unsuccessful application to the Charity in the past 12 months;
  • Previously submitted an application where the applicant failed the Charity Trustees' due diligence checks and the issues identified at that time have not been addressed;
  • Previously received a grant from the Charity in the previous three years;
  • Been submitted by an individual.

No, you don't have to be a member to apply. Any charity or organisation that meets our application criteria can apply.

The Charitable Foundation was established by Leek Building Society, but makes its decisions independently.
