Helping girls find their place in sport

12th August 2026

There’s something pretty special about being part of a local sports club.

It’s never just about learning how to bowl, bat, or field. It’s about trying something new, making lifelong mates, building real confidence, and having a place where you genuinely feel you belong.

That’s why we’re proud to support local teams like Leek Cricket Club, helping them open up the game for even more young people in our area.

"We couldn't do it without the support of Leek Building Society."

- Brian Mellor, Club Chairman

We recently popped down to Leek Cricket Club to catch the action firsthand and hand out a few of our branded pump bags. Unsurprisingly, a few of the adults were in line to grab one too!

It was brilliant to see the club buzzing with young players enjoying their cricket, and to hear about the work they’re doing to grow their women’s and girls’ game from the ground up.

For us, that’s what supporting local communities is all about. It’s not just about putting our name on a sign or sponsoring a team. It’s about helping create opportunities for people in the places we call home.

Why local clubs matter

Local clubs can make a real difference to young people. They give children somewhere to go, something to enjoy and the chance to be part of a team.

And when more girls have the opportunity to get involved, they can discover something they love, make new friends and build confidence along the way.

We’re proud to play a part in helping that happen at Leek Cricket Club, alongside the volunteers, coaches and families who give so much of their time to make the club what it is.

It’s all part of what we’re here for

As a mutual, our communities are at the heart of what we do.

Our purpose is simple: we exist to help our communities grow, so they can do great things today – and even better things tomorrow.

Supporting local clubs is one of the ways we can bring that to life. Whether it’s helping young people get active, supporting grassroots sport or simply being there for something happening on our doorstep, we want to be part of the communities we serve.

Because when local communities have the chance to thrive, everyone benefits.

Want to give cricket a try?

If your child would like to give cricket a go, get in touch with Leek Cricket Club to find out more about their junior, women’s and girls’ cricket. You can visit there website, here: Leek Cricket Club

There’s more to the club than what happens on the pitch.

We caught up with Leek Cricket Club chairman Brian to hear what the club means to the local community, why growing the women’s and girls’ game matters, and what’s next for the club.
